Greece vs Scotland UEFA World Cup Qualifiers Group C MD 5 Preview

The main event this weekend is tomorrow evening in Piraeus as Scotland aim to keep alive our automatic World Cup Qualification hopes away to Greece.

Here's the micro preview....

Telly and KO
It's a 19:45 start tomorrow night and the game is live on BBC Scotland with coverage underway from 19:15. Also available on iPlayer and the BBC Sport Scotland website.

What we need
Assuming that Denmark swat aside Belarus in Copenhagen, which they absolutely will, we need a point in Greece to keep our hopes of winning the group alive.

That would set up a cup final against the Danes at Hampden on Tuesday night where a home win would take us to our first World Cup Finals since 1998.

A win in at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskáki would of course be very welcome too but unless Belarus do the unthinkable in Denmark it actually wouldn't make any difference to the must win scenario we face on Tuesday.

Familiar Foes
This will be our 4th meeting with Greece in just over a year, having only ever played them twice in the previous 150 years.

Our visit to Piraeus in March saw us leave with a 1-0 first leg lead in our Nations League Play Off match, courtsey of a Scott McTominay penalty.

That win was reversed and then some just 3 days later as the Greeks came to Glasgow and smashed us 3-0.

Our World Cup Qualifying meeting in Glasgow was just 5 weeks ago when we roared back from a goal down with half an hour to play to seal a fantastic if highly flattering 3-1 victory thanks to goals from Christie, Ferguson and Dykes.

Greek Tragedy
Despite plenty of pretty football the Greeks are already out of qualifying contention, even for a play off place, and indeed they have actually only won 1 of their 4 games to date, a 5-1 trouncing of Belarus on MD1.

Denmark beat them 3-0 in Greece and 3-1 in Copenhagen, and that along with the loss in Glasgow saw them bow out of qualifying.

Goal Conundrum
With 17 scored in those 4 qualifiers there's generally never any shortage of goals when Greece are involved these days.

That said, they have actually failed to score themselves in 3 of their last 4 at home, and Scotland have posted three consecutive clean sheets on the road.

With a game script where Greece have nothing but ranking points to play for and Scotland would kill for just a point, perhaps a nervy 0-0 draw is on the cards.

Referee
The ref tomorrow night is Jesús Gil Manzano of Spain. The man generally loves a card, having shown 43 yellows and 6 reds in just 12 outings this season.

He can also get thoroughly carried away as he hit double digits on cards shown no fewer than 3 times last season, including a remarkable 14 yellows and a red shown in one game as Las Palmas drew with Osasuna.

Incredibly however he also did Celtic vs Bayern Munich at Parkhead last season and didn't show any cards at all!

Bookies
The bookies make the home side favs tomorrow but still odds against at 11/10. Scotland are a big 11/4 to record another win over there and the draw is a 21/10 shot.

Divs Bonkers Bet
I'll be waiting for team news before picking a random bet builder for this one but one thing to note is that Lewis Ferguson has been carded in all three of the games with Greece inside the last year.

Very best of luck to Steve Clarke and his side tomorrow night, and hope everyone over there has an absolute ball!

Alba gu bràth!
