The best Scottish Premiership transfers of all-time

The best Scottish Premiership transfers of all-time

Although it is ranked lower than many other major European leagues, the top tier of Scottish football has been graced by some truly top-class players.

The division has been subjected to several name changes during its history, but has operated under the Scottish Premiership moniker since 2013.

We’re going to use a little artistic licence and look at the best top-flight transfers in Scotland since ‘premier’ was introduced into the equation in 1975.

Henrik Larsson

After four successful years in his native Sweden, Henrik Larsson spent a similar amount of time in the Netherlands with Feyenoord.

His spell with the Dutch giants was largely frustrating and a contract dispute opened the door for Celtic to complete a shock £650,000 transfer in 1997.

He bagged 224 goals in 292 during his seven years in Glasgow, helping the club win four league titles and four domestic cups.

Larsson finished as Celtic’s top scorer in six of the seven full seasons he completed and is widely regarded as one of the finest overseas players ever to play in Scotland.

Richard Gough

Rangers completed several surprising transfers towards the end of the 21st century including a shock move for former Celtic star Mo Johnston in 1989.

However, their acquisition of Richard Gough from Tottenham Hotspur two years earlier was arguably their most important signing during that period.

Gough was the defensive bedrock of the team, captaining them to nine consecutive league titles and another nine domestic cup successes.

The term ‘legend’ is thrown around a little too easily in professional football, but undoubtedly applies to this true Rangers hero.

Andy Goram

Goram started his career with Oldham Athletic, before moving to Scotland to join Hibernian in 1987. He stayed there for four years before signing for Rangers.

The Bury-born goalkeeper quickly established himself as a fan favourite, playing a key role in five league title and five domestic cup successes.

Goram had a long running rivalry with Jim Leighton for the number one role with Scotland and eventually quit international football ahead of the 1998 World Cup.

His shot-stopping ability earned him the nickname ‘The Goalie’ from adoring Rangers fans and he is unquestionably one of the clubs best-ever purchases.

Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk technically qualifies for two entries on the list of best Scottish Premiership transfers of all time.

Celtic paid £2.6 million to sign Van Dijk from Groningen in 2013 before selling him to Southampton for £11.5m two years later.

The Dutchman looked a cut above the rest in the Scottish Premiership, breezing effortlessly through games as Celtic swept to two league titles with him in the team.

Van Dijk subsequently earned a big money move to Liverpool after starring for the Saints and is still rated as one of the best defenders in the world.

Brian Laudrup

After making a name for himself with several clubs in Europe, Laudrup completed a surprising £2.3m move to Rangers in 1994.

He is rightly regarded as one of the finest players to represent the club, with his sublime talent on the ball allowing him to destroy opponents.

Laudrup won three league titles and two domestic cups during a four-year stint with Rangers that he has described as the best period of his career.

The Danish international joined Larsson as the first players from outside Scotland to be inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2006 – just reward for what they each achieved.
