The World Cup 2022: Can Scotland Qualify?

A win at during their Nations League group might not guarantee Scotland a place at the next world cup, but it will certainly help if they fail to automatically qualify.

There will be a standard qualifying campaign in Qatar, with up to six nations in 10 groups battling it all. The winner of each group will qualify for the World Cup and teams that reach second place will progress to a further play-off round. In total there are 12 play-off places up for grabs, which means as well as those that qualify here, there are two spots open to countries that won their National League round but didn’t qualify for the World Cup or the playoff rounds. On top of this, there are likely to be more spots open, as some teams who won their Nations League group.

We know that Scotland have been placed in the third pot for the World Cup qualifying group draw, which means there are likely to be two strong teams in their same group. If we assume that they don’t win or come second in their qualifying group, they have a good chance of entering the play-off, if they win their Nations League group. During this time, 12 teams will be drawn and through a set of semi-finals and finals, the final nations to join will be decided.

In effect, this means that if Scotland is triumphant in their Nations League group, they are very likely to have a place in the World Cup 2020 and that is exactly what they’ll be hoping for.
