Who Is King Kenny?
Sir Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish, also known as King Kenny, is a former football player and manager from Scotland. He was born on March 4, 1951, and he is recognized as one of the best players of all time. He is also known as one of Britain’s greatest players and a key part of the Celtic and Liverpool teams.
His career with Celtic began in 1971, and in 1977, he was transferred to Liverpool after manager Bob Paisley had paid a generous fee to take the player to his team. Kenny was so good that he took Liverpool to victory many times and even won several cups. In May 1967, Dalglish signed a professional contract with Celtic. However, it was only in September 1968 that he made his first-team competitive debut for the squad.
In the 1968-1969 seasons, he played for the reserves. In 17 games, he only scored 4 goals. But the following season, he scored 19 goals in 31 games after changing his position. In the 1969-70 season, he didn’t score in the 3 first-team games, but as time passed, he kept scoring goals from the reserves.
It was only in 1971-72 that Dalglish joined the Celtic first team. In the 1975-1976 season, the club didn’t win any trophy, and Dalglish was the captain at the time. In 1977, Dalglish was signed by Liverpool, which led to Celtic fans booing the player when he played in a testimonial match for Stein in 1978.
Dalglish became a replacement for Kevin Keegan, and his Liverpool career was incredible. He scored hundreds of goals and became the team’s manager after years of being a player. This happened following Joe Fagan’s resignation. Dalglish took Liverpool to its first “double” in the 1985-1986 season.

King Kenny’s Career Beyond Celtic and Liverpool
Dalglish didn’t just stick with the Celtics and Liverpool. He also played international football, making 102 appearances for Scotland and scoring 30 goals during that time. He was also chosen for the Scottish FIFA World Cup groups in 1974, 1978, 1982, and 1986.
Aside from Liverpool, he also managed the Blackburn Rovers and later stepped down to become the club’s director of football. He became the Newcastle United manager in 1997 and was named director of football at Celtic in 1999. He was also the manager for a while and left the club in 2000.
Dalglish focused on charity between 2000 and 2010 and founded the Marina Dalglish Appeal with his wife. The goal of the organization was to raise money for cancer patients. Dalglish then went back to Liverpool as a caretaker manager but was dismissed in 2012. Then, he went to Anfield as a non-executive director in 2013.
During the pandemic in 2020, Dalglish was in hospital to treat a health condition and was also found to be positive for the coronavirus, but without symptoms. Later, in 2023, he won the BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Even though Dalglish is no longer on the pitch, he remains one of the most influential players in the world. He will be forever remembered for his contributions to Liverpool and not only, both as a player and manager.
