Can Rangers Steady the Ship in the January Transfer Window?

Rangers' season has been bizarre, to say the least. Slipping behind Celtic and Aberdeen before clawing their way back, leading to talk of a title race just a few weeks ago.

A last-minute defeat away at St Mirren and a draw against Motherwell has heaped the pressure back on under-fire boss Philippe Clement. It had seemed that a few decent performances, including a draw in Europe against Tottenham and a narrow cup final defeat to Celtic on penalties, had turned things around.

However, it is now looking increasingly unlikely that Rangers will be able to turn things around. Bookmakers currently have Celtic priced at around 1/40 to retain the title.

Online gambling expert Ciaran McEneaney explains that finding the right site can help fans find the best odds for their team, with Rangers currently priced at around 40/1 to pull off a massive shock. Dedicated sports betting sites provide a better choice of markets as well, including match betting and top goalscorer markets, with some of the best available here.

There have been some positives for Rangers this season, with the emergence of Hamza Igamane being top. He has already been linked with a move to several English Premier League teams.

The idea of losing a promising talent so early in his Rangers career will upset some fans, but the loss of players like Kent, Morelos, Barisic, and Lundstrum for nothing in recent seasons underlines the importance of cashing in on prized assets when possible.

When the January transfer window opens it will be interesting to see whether Rangers can hold onto their top players, or whether they will choose to cash in and reinvest in the squad.

One position the club are likely to try and strengthen is in defence with Souttar's continued injury problems and loan signing Neraysho Kasanwirjo being ruled out for the season.

Players like Matondo, Dessers, and Dowell could be moved on to raise funds as well as Yilmaz and Lawrence who have found their playing time limited.

Interest in former Igamane teammate Hatim Essaoubi could ease Rangers' defensive worries, while links with Leeds forward Joe Gelhardt could move forward if the clubs can agree a deal.

Another player linked with a move to the Glasgow club is Chilean winger Dario Osorio who currently plays his football in Denmark with Midtjylland. However, with some of Europe's top clubs also interested, they are likely to be priced out of a move.

The club have also been linked to 21-year-old Croatian defensive midfielder Marko Soldo of NK Osijek. Rangers have had dealings with the Croatian club in the past, signing Borna Barisic and Eros Grezda.

It was never in doubt that Clement had a rebuilding job ahead of him, and sacking him and starting over again could set the club back even further. There might be some movement in terms of pre-contract agreements with an eye on next year, but the club will have to add some new blood if they are to remain competitive this season.
